Plastic City * plax083-6 * Greg Parker * Get High * Tech-House * 2010-07-30 * 12inch

After his latest three digital releases on Plastic City. Play and the outstanding “All Good Things EP” on vinyl last year, Greg Parker just published his first album “10 Solutions” in spring 2010 on Plastic City. It contains already a dub version of the final track “Get High”. Therefore now here comes the release of the original version with remixes by Terry Lee Brown Junior and Voltan. You will be surprised how energetic and powerful the original version will infiltrate your veins. With “Get High” Greg Parker created a very funky and stomping tech house track that developes enormously during its 9:44 minutes runtime. Beats and basses are changing constantly it seems. Percussions seem to accrue but stay diaphanous magically the hole time. The vocals unfurl an absolutely hypnotic effect. Great track, great feeling.

Terry Lee Brown Junior who had already two releases on Plastic City. Play (“Electric Avenue”) and Plastic City (re-release of “Bad House Music” released 1995 at first) in 2010, takes all the energy of the original and calms it down. A bit dark but very relaxed his bleak bassline is contrasted by light chords in the background. A really great remix with an enormous drive.

Voltan makes it a bit more melancholic. Straight and strait beats combined with very thin highs are building the surrounding for vocals and this dubby atmosphere. His remix concentrates on the more emotional characteristics of the original track. A bit bigger room here, a bit other vocal work there and a bit more melody in the foreground. This remix is a really good transformation of all the energy of the original.

Hot Flush Recordings * hfcd004 * Mount Kimbie * Crooks + Lovers * Dubstep * 2010-07-23 * CD

BBC Review

The term dubstep is becoming increasingly, wonderfully nebulous, just the right side of meaningless. From Burial to Eleven Tigers and now Mount Kimbie, it seems to function as an ignition switch to embark on vast-ranging explorations into an imaginary, post-nightclub world, in which nostalgia and future horizons loom equally large. What is “dubstep”? Who, in a sense, cares? In this instance, it’s Crooks + Lovers, the first album proper by the duo Dominic Maker and Kai Campos, the latest in a long line of similarly unassuming-looking young dudes to get together to create improbably fabulous alchemy in electronica.

Crooks + Lovers is an album of abrupt changes and paradoxes, at once organic and heavily processed, drowsy and yet with moments of eyes-on-stalks urgency, acoustically sweet and electrically charged. It's akin to gently drifting in and out of consciousness on a bus trip, only to be sporadically jolted back into consciousness.

Tunnelvision, the opener, floats down from some odd, hazy place, reminiscent of soon-to-be-revived oceanic 80s rockers A.R. Kane, a mix of short, acoustic riffs, disembodied voices and an adjacent rhythm shuffling by like a caterpillar. Would Know follows, swaddled in grainy bromide, borrowing the Daft Punk opening-the-door-to-the-nightclub effect. Before I Move Off and Carbonated exhibit Mount Kimbie's duality in full, double-vision effect, the latter juxtaposing effervescent pop balm with a dramatic, dub swell. Adriatic, blissful and lapping, is a sweet interlude, the briefest of holiday postcards, while Ruby, with its shimmering, apocalyptic horizon is most noticeably in some sort of neo-Burial, dubstep tradition. But then follows the beguiling, puzzling Field, whose lengthy, faded-in intro features the alien, thrumming sound of a rhythmic device hitherto unknown to man systematically chomping away at everything in its path, before being abruptly supplanted by to a bucolic mid-section more reminiscent of the likes of Bibio.

Unmoored and out there, Mount Kimbie come across in interviews as a little startled themselves by what they've come up with, and continue to come up with, but that's all to the good. They've no idea where they're going. Go with them.

Harthouse * hhma017-2 * Boris Brejcha * My Name Is * Techno * 2010-07-22 * CD

Sound-design from a far-away galaxy, functional and intelligent arrangements, tricky elements somewhere between "handmade" and "cinema-scope" and continuously surprising ideas - this is the music of an extraordinary talent: Boris Brejcha.

He's one of the most productive creative minds of this time segment and while constantly releasing a great amount of tracks, his music does not sound like the work of a mechanic following a certain formula. Boris' force roots from a unique style that has a focus on diversity and still you recognize his hand-writing while listening to his tricky arrangements and breaks that are different as they can be. Some years ago Brejcha suddenly entered the international club-league and announced his goals by tracks as "Ich zeige es euch" – no exaggeration at all when looking at the development of his career, he quickly messed up the establishment and his extraordinary live performances and costumes caused more and more public interest. Harthouse signs responsible for several of Brejcha's releases - two albums and many maxi singles stand for a successful cooperation between artist and label. They grew together and Boris got one of the central artists on Harthouse. It's clear that Brejcha’s third strike is presented by Harthouse and will spread the word of a better tomorrow concerning quality dance music.

His third long player "MY NAME IS" might set up the question whether he continues emphasizing his definition of Science Fiction Techno. You can answer YES and NO: his fans will immediately recognize his unique style in the opener "Express myself" and they will be thankful for that! "MY NAME IS" carries on the spirit of the preceding long players but at the same time announces a new definition of his stylistic varying, state of the art produced and well thought work. You find every single element exactly at the right spot - these tracks frightening precisely aim at the huge summer events - crisp, fresh and always wearing a tiny smile - this would be a satisfying conclusion of his album, but there's several tracks spreading a wider stylistic landscape - harmonic and dreamful "Flockentanz" for example provides listening comfort in the suburbs of the dancefloor, too.

The compilation of Brejchas compositions develops into different styles and atmospheres. "Ich zeige es euch" declares the borders between functional, minimalistic club-sound and neo trancy melodies to be torn down. Endless reverberated spheres are cut into pieces, reversed they rush into emptiness or break into a thousand pieces by crashing into the suddenly appearing grooves. The name-giving track "My name is" raises the bar for straightforward club music: Brejcha is more than capable of driving the masses to insanity. The unforeseeable changes are pure pleasure and draw a clear picture in front of your inner eye: Crowded dance floor, peaktime, raging masses go nuts! Bravo - somebody knows how to carry something to extremes!

"You will rise" is a 10-minutes-hypnotic device that combines hard and direct elements and gentleman-like sound design. Never ever it gets boring - alternating effects and tiny tricky sounds create the style Boris Brejcha is famous for - "My name is" underlines and steels his position! The music of “MEIN NAME IS” is more grownup and this album presents stylistic deeper and wider stuff than many of contemporary music's productions - thus with great cause we announce a real highlight for this summer!

Tru Thoughts Recordings * trucd214 * Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno * Dog With A Rope * Electronica * 2010-07-22 * CD

Second album from Quantic’s tropical side project bringing dub and reggae flavours to the Latin American and African sounds that he has been chasing round the globe since he first started collecting records.

An album inspired by soundsystem culture but widened out far beyond just reggae and dancehall styles ‘Dog With A Rope’ is a Tropical soundclash – encompassing a heavy bass and reggae aesthetic alongside the Tropical dance-orientated music from Cuba, Puerto Rico and Colombia. While lots of DJs are currently playing both classic and obscure old reggae, funk and Cumbia, Holland noted that not many people are currently making new music of this type and building on these styles in a modern way, so with his signature combination of faith in the past and hunger to push forward, with this album he strove to make the connection. He recorded the album in his Sonido Del Valle studio in Cali, Colombia, the city he has called home since his relocation in 2007.

A true musical obsessive, Holland’s insatiable drive to create new sounds has seen him record and release fourteen full albums under various guises in less than ten years, selling well over 100,000 records in the process and gaining worldwide acclaim as one of the leading lights of the leftfield dance music world. His last album, 2009’s ‘Tradition In Transition’ by Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, scaled the official European World Music Charts, gaining heavy radio and tastemaker support and rave reviews in the likes of Q, MOJO, The Guardian, The Independent On Sunday and many more publications worldwide. High profile tours of the UK, Europe and America followed, including festival headline sets; and this March saw Quantic DJing for the hordes at SXSW.

While it is essentially a solo project, Quantic has called on the finest musicians in their fields to create the rich tapestry of sound on ‘Dog With A Rope’. These include the pianist Alfredito Linares, a Peruvian legend who appeared on Quantic’s last three albums; and Nídia Góngora, who you may also remember from ‘Tradition In Transition’, not least as the writer and singer of the beautiful single “Un Canto A Mi Tierra”. Jamaican born, UK based drummer Conrad Kelly was a key part of the British West Midland reggae scene, playing with the likes of UB40 and Steel Pulse and to this album he brings, in Holland’s words, “that heavy Jamaican sound we all know and love”. Markittos Micolta, who sings on a number of tracks, was the frontman for the Colombian band Peregoyo y su Combo Vacana, one of the first groups to combine Descarga and Cuban sounds with Colombian folklore, having many hits on Fuentes records in the 60s and 70s. Also beginning his career in the Peregoyo ranks, Buenaventura born percussionist Wilson Viveros went on to become a highly sought after session percussionist in Bogota, recording on countless legendary Colombian releases, and now brings his unique skills to Quantic’s latest venture.

Musik Krause * mkcd004 * Feindrehstar * Vulgarian Knights * Electronica * 2010-07-22 * CD

In the crossroads of real live performance as club entertainment presents Musikkrause the debut album of Feindrehstar.

The Jena natives have made a life on the stage as a collective over the last 10 years. If you include a number of 7 inches and EP's, their sound is a live concept. An exhilarating connection of the functional with the ornamental - hard working dance music on stage with a house essence and adose of the hip-hop with a funk + jazz base.

The sextet is composed of the trumpet, saxophone, scratch + samples, bass, percussions, drums, Rhodes + keys and with point blank ideas an interesting sonic garden blooms. As a unit of virtuoso composers with serious sonic tools Feindrehstar presents on their first LP “Vulgarian Knights”. The recording took place together with Axel Reinemer and Immo Wischhusen (Flowin IMMO) is Jazzanova Studio in Berlin. The urban arranged rhythm architecture from Michael Baumann (Soulphiction/Jackmate). Thanks to this co production a brilliantly energetic live program is manifest on the cd. The result is a statement: This is a journey into our sound! An album in a reserved spiritual cast, that’s complete down to its individual tracks. Spin this record any way you please.

From a pure jammed out playfulness there grew a sparkling conversation between the winds and those with keys - sometimes a rugged funk, others a finely-sensed Jazz, and then completely improvised. A music with value added for an urbane, scenic people and for everyone whose heart beats along. It is the pact between the stage-excesses + a club integrity that Feindrehstar does so well.

Wormland White * wmwcd0012 * Mikis Theodorakis + Francesco Diaz * Timeless - The 85th Anniversary Album * Listening / Lounge * 2010-07-22 * CD

Just in time for the 85th birthday of Mikis Theodorakis (born on 29th July 1925), the production of one of the most spectacular Theodorakis album projects of the last years has been accomplished. Hamburg-based house musician Francesco Diaz, one of the pioneering and defining artists of the Ibiza sound, a man who due to his DJ-style and countless compilations has been labeled as house gourmet, has put his hands on 12 Theodorakis songs, summoned some truly outstanding musicians into his studio and produced new versions of the legendary
material. Interweaving the voices of Mikis Theodorakis, Karl Frierson, Kaliopi Vetta and Petros Pandis with fresh sounds ranging from acid jazz to deep house with a soulful and sometimes funky vibe, his deep-felt love for the charismatic Greek shines through in every second of his diligent production.

„Time shift“ – could be the label of this unique Theodorakis and Diaz cooperation resulting in some fine bridgework which now leads from Athens via Hamburg to Ibiza, covering the time span of half of a centrury and carrying Theodorakis’ unforgettable melodies from the past into the future. A tremendous effort in the spirit of this legendary musician who loved to bring music to the people to make them have a better understand of their own kind.

From the Zorbas dancefloors to stylish chill-out lounges and clubs of contemporary Europe, and high up in the sky above a Mediterranean world which is deeply rooted in antique traditions, this music will unite people of all origins. The album practices what is preached in almost all realms of the world we live in today, that to justify your existence you have to continually reinvent yourself. Theodorakis himself puts it this way: „You will once more dare to believe that music makes man more beautiful when you listen to these album tracks which follow one another as the 12 months of a year, each one surprising in its very own way.“

At the end of the day you will be more than willing to submerge in this THEODORDIAZ WORLD and press repeat to sink deeper down than any submarine may carry you. Down in the mysterious dark beyond all time, music will suddenly make you recognise the place where the original wave is shaped, somersaulting you back ashore to „The Beach.“

Plastic City * plac073-2 * Greg Parker * 10 Solutions * Deep House * 2010-07-15 * CD

Actually, it was long overdue: The first own album of Greg Parker, who has always had his home at Plastic City. Everything begun with his friendship to Terry Lee Brown Junior, who brought him to produce own tracks. At this time, Greg Parker was already a local hero in and around Darmstadt and inspired his followers with intense and deep Tech-house sets. In 2006 he co-produced the Terry Lee Brown Junior track "I Feel Lost" which was released on Terry's Album "Karambolage". Since then, the tracks by Greg Parker get an enormous popularity. Be it on vinyl (2009 with the great "All The Good Things EP" and the three digital EP's "Dreams", "Drop Out" and "Understanding" on the sub-label Plastic City. Play), on compilations such as "Plastic City Radio Show, Season Two","Terry's Café" or "Zurich Session" or as a remixer for Terry Lee Brown Junior, The Timewriter, nor elle, Smalltown Collective or modified Tojami Sessions. Greg Parker also experimented very successfully with Terry Lee Brown Junior in the fields of electronica, dub, lounge and as the remix team "Elephants And Lollipops" (for example for the track "Alex Flatner feat. Lopazz - Perfect Circles" on Circle Music). At the latest it should be clear here: The creative output is based on a source of inspirational creativity.<br><br>The album "10 Solutions" therefore will be his debut album. If you read the title of the album and the tracklisting before self-confidence, you will feel maybe the positivism, brightness and the later at once quite dark musical instincts and you will discover how you click unabashed anticipation of playing the tracks in the beginning of the album. Since then it roars to a past all the mystical, dark, driving, dubby, melodic tracks with "Like My Self", "Feels Good" and "You Know" and learns to half actually a clever reversal of disarming directness in bright shining light. By "September", "Future", "My House", "Vacuum" and "Cheerfully Days" achieved that the album is a playful lightheartedness in contrast to the first half of the album and it is sometimes futuristic that you may think that you've to take off. On the end you will find the dub version of the first single "Get High", which will be released as vinyl as well (including remixes by Terry Lee Brown Junior and Volkan), which will bring you back to earth. And then you will recognize: "Yes! 10 Solutions are for your feets because they dance. 10 Solutions are for our breath and for which we're grateful".<br><br><i><b>Video:</b> <a href="http://www.plasticcity.de/index.php?main=artist+artist=greg_parker_10_solutions+name=Greg+Parker">Greg Parker - 10 Solutions</a><br><br><b><font color="red">Hot!</font> Free Download:</b> <a href="http://www.plasticcity.de/index.php?main=artist+artist=greg-parker-any-how+name=Greg+Parker">Any How</a></i>

Cavo Paradiso * cp010 * Various Artists * Cavo Paradiso 10 – Definitions, mixed by Satoshi Tomiie + Matthias Tanzmann * Tech-House * 2010-07-15 * 2CD

Greek seaside club Cavo Paradiso is consistently rated as one of Europe’s top clubbing destinations, and while listening to one of their double CDs in sunny London isn’t quite on the same level, it’s still a rather pleasant summer experience. Japanese hero Satoshi Tomiie and Moon Harbour Recordings boss Mathias Tanzmann are given the controls for this compilation.

From his proggy styles of old there remains some hangover in Tomiie’s sound – dreamy, dainty, hypnotic vibes run through the mix, but are bolstered by some straight up grooving too. Feygin’s low-slung B Local provides a stomping anchor to push and pull against after a hazy first quartet, while it’s left to Phillipp’s moody Federation to bring some drama and engrossing live percussion into the mix. The next couple of tracks pass by a bit unnoticed, but Dani Casarano + Felipe Valenzuela’s glorious Tony Sonny is an absolute stunner – all moody jazz pianos and yearning soulful vocal snippets that create a classy, sensual little roller. Hereon it’s all about galloping skippy beats and rhythms, with Matthias Meyer’s bongo-filled Infinity raising the pressure, and Doomwork’s Aplauso al Ocaso bringing some African tribalism and vocals into the game. Lee Van Dowski’s Die Eisenbahn makes for a deeper, more contemplative techy finale.

Tanzmann kicks off with the smooth musicality and lively trumpets of Martin Buttrich’s I Am Going There One Day, before an album highlight comes in the shape of Chris Carrier’s summer stomper Cabaret Des Belles Lettres. We get to an almost garage flow with the skippy beats and bumping bass of Mathais Kaden’s re-rub of Luna City Express’ Diamonds + Pearls, setting us up perfectly for the hushed jazzy tones and woozy vocals of Johnny D’s Rashaida, like dOP in full delicate form. Then – WOMP – big bass slams in from Tanzmann’s remix of Michael Melchner’s Four To The Floor, the energetic feel continuing with a classic hip-hop horn sample on Oleg Poliakov’s Caravan. This is definitely the more engrossing of the two mixes, and the one that you can really see yourself grooving away al fresco to.

Since last year L'elephant has been acquired by new owners. It is being managed by Patrick Soks (formerly KM5 Ibiza). The musical direction is
being taken care of by Bruno From Ibiza (ex Cafe del Mar, Blue Marlin, Space), now also their resident DJ.

H-Productions * hpx44cd * Cari Lekebusch * State of the Art * Techno * 2010-07-12 * CD

His prolific output has seen Lekebusch release a string of albums and mix compilations over the years, receiving critical acclaim for his work to date. His latest foray into the world of the long player sees this experienced artist pull out all the stops and deliver a stunning body of work that makes up "State of the Art". From the atmospherics of the opening title track its clear that this album is here to grab your attention. There is a depth of character in these recordings thats cemented by Lekebuschs flawless production skills, be it the stripped minimalism of "Abomination", the bass and synth driven intensity of "Saw Tooth" or the ethereal vocal led "Rising Star", they all deliver perfectly, providing snapshots into the sonic sound of this supreme producer.

Highlights are hard to pick on such a consistently good album, but the rolling old school techno of "Simplicity" is certainly worth noting for his heads down hypnotic quality that has one instantly hooked. Likewise the closing cut "Art of Technology" is worth a mention for its dark and spacious sound driven out of a marriage of sci-fi ambience and electro tinged percussive elements. However there really is not a bad track here, with each piece bring new elements to the fore and further displaying Lekebuschs studio mastery.

Rebirth records * reb0062 * Rennie Foster * Blood Sugar * Tech-House * 2010-07-12 * CD

Rennie Foster has been a well respected figure in the Canadian music and art community since he was just a teenager. After visiting Japan several times to play, Rennie fell in love with the techno oriented Tokyo club scene and has since relocated to Tokyo where he now lives.
With singles on labels such as Subject-Detroit, Monoid, Synewave, Soiree, F Communications etc. and his own imprints Futago Traxx and Dirty Works, his sound fuses the refined “minimal” elements of modern club sounds with the vibe of filthy Chicago House, classic Detroit Techno and early rave records. Recently he has been also voted by Loud Magazine in the Top50 djs of the Japan dance electronic music scene. Currently ranked at #22!

‘Devil’s Water’, released in 2008 on Rebirth is an incredible piece of modern underground electronic music. Djs like Sasha, James Holden, James Zabiela, Pete Tong, Laurent Garnier, Ben Watt, Trentemoller, Agoria played it in all their sets, and considered it as one of the tunes of the year ! It became a true underground anthem and fueled the inspiration of creating the full length album "Blood Sugar".

‘Blood Sugar’ is about the balance of sweetness and innocence (sugar) with darkness, depth and melancholy (Blood). This correlation can be also found in Rennie’s music where the darker vision of his sound lives with the sweeter side !

It contains the essence of Japanese inspired beauty while maintaining the grit and mentality of the Detroit/Chicago sound. Timeless production with collaborations from artists like Aaron-Carl (one of Detroit’s most enduring and soulful artists), Moka Only (ex Swollen Members, a pioneer and driving force behind Canadian West Coast hip hop) and unidentified soft female vocals, subtle, spooky, balanced with references to classic dance music. Blood Sugar is known to effect the mood of a person and this album reflects that with abstract references and suggestions, both in the song titles, melodies and sound pallette, to the human body's mysterious relationship to different emotional states. The album also includes jacket photography by Rennie's close Tokyo cohort, Hiroshi Watanabe aka Kaito, known for his stellar releases on Kompakt.

Tronic * tr032 * Wehbba * Full Circle * Techno * 2010-07-12 * CD

Founded in 1994, Christian Smith’s Tronic label holds a special place in techno circles. A leading force in shaping a less purist techno style, Tronic was amongst the first labels to embrace sounds from house and techno to create records that DJ’s from both scenes would play. Spearheaded by Smith’s ever-popular productions, the label was re-launched with a bang in 2009 and continues its strong reputation for big room house and techno with the release of ‘Full Circle’, the debut LP from Brazilian producer Wehbba.

Having delivered standout releases for Renaissance, Bedrock, Great Stuff, Get Physical and Primate and garnered the support of DJ Hell, John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo Wehbba’s ‘Full Circle’ LP is a natural next step for such a prolific producer. ‘Full Circle’ takes in ten tracks of superb house and techno characterised by heavily melodic content and dense, contstantly evolving textures. From the blistering opener ‘The Speech’ to the final bars of closer ‘Technocolor’ we see Wehbba deliver a massive variety of sounds and emotions yet the LP as a whole is cohesive and just ‘makes sense’ as a listen.

Whether it’s brilliantly executed big room techno such as ‘The Speech’ and it’s manic, nagging synth lines or the undulating slo-mo house groove of ‘Still Life’ the one element that brings ‘Full Circle’ together so well is the sense that its an album which draws the listener through it. Organic and ‘traditional’ sounds such as ‘Another Light’’s rousing pianos or ‘All I Need’’s organ stabs and cheeky vocal sample meld seamlessly with harsher electronic sounds throughout which allows the music to really do the talking.

Save To Disc * std105 * Der Dritte Raum * Rosa Rausch * Techno * 2010-07-09 * CD

Der Dritte Raum is back! It’s hard to believe but it’s been 16 years since Andreas Krüger released his first album on Harthouse, followed by five more albums and countless 12-inches on various labels. This coming album, his seventh, will be released on his own imprint Save to Disc, which has recently been the subject of a friendly takeover by Andreas. With Rosa Rausch, Andreas has released another one of his typical musical kaleidoscopes. His distinctive grooves last from the first to the very last bar of the record - sometimes brisk, sometimes subtle; he knows how to fascinate his audience. His deep love for hypnotic arrangements and entrancing synth-lines - derived from the classic machines of the last century - exudes from every moment of this album. Still the tracks don’t fit the usual labels. The impact of two decades of House and Techno merge with solid Ambient sounds, Electro and Swing into a genre-busting amalgam full of musical surprises. You can hear that this bedrock of Techno history is beyond proving himself to anyone, every musical facet is an exactly placed but casual shot from the hip. Andreas exquisitely manages to transfer day-to-day inspiration into distinct musical positions. Wonderful moments come out of this vintage machinery: pounding and hissing like a steam train, title track Rosa Rausch gains momentum on this trip into the countryside. Beats jingle cheerfully like ice cubes in a highball glass. Summery synthies convey a feeling of sand between your toes. Two other tracks, Lieblingsloop and Blautaut, also have this spirit of the summer; with a feeling of effortlessness and of the sun shining on your face, the music takes your hand and draws you to the dance floor. That’s where Swing Bop is already waiting for you. Last year’s uber-hit, still putting a smile on all our faces. But, as we all know, Der Dritte Raum has other sides to him, too. Gerät außer Kontrolle lets lose a crazy percussion session, a worthy reference to old school Techno.

BBE Records * bbe119ccd * Various Artists * City to City Vol. 3, mixed by DJ Deep * House * 2010-07-09 * CD

This is definitely not a ‘Classic House compilation’ but more a very personal selection of older and newer tracks that have a very special place in DJ Deep’s heart and his record box. DJ Deep says - The idea behind City to City volume 3 is to say the spirit of House is still therein many Dancers, Music lovers and Producer’s hearts. I personally think there is a common link between Frozen Border and Armando’s early productions, Redshape is definitely a today’s interpretation of a natural, raw, very sensitive and full of emotions from the Chicago House era. Traxx is one of the soldiers of this movement - a Nation of Jackers who still believe that the spirit is alive and worth fighting for. When i heard Ben Klock’s remix of “Pong” by NY’s House legend Kerri Chandler, I was really thrilled. To me it was like connecting the many dots of the House universe i love so much. Going from the master of the Deep Raw Underground Jersey House sound - Kerri Chandler to experimenting with Electronic sounds of his favourite Video Games, to the Berlin Based studio of Mr Ben Klock delivering a subtle dark and mysterious still funky as hell music where you can feel the influences of early Chicago House and Detroit Techno. This album evokes the ‘golden days’ of ‘house’ through the senses of DJ Deep. Those who have partied under the disco balls at legendary clubs such as The Music Box, The Warehouse, The Hacienda, are likely to have house flashbacks. Those who haven’t will be startled to hear an avalanche of ethereal dance music, which will make you ache for your disco dancing shoes.

Drawing influence from the wider sphere of world music and live instrumentation, Osunlade isn’t a created professional persona, he really is at one with his art. African beats, Jazz, Soul and captivating vocals are all part of the Osunlade sound, a sound with uncommon depth for house music but one that remains focused on the dance floor.

The first choice to launch the new Strictly Ibiza series, Osunlade joined forces with Strictly Rhythm for the 2007 release of his acclaimed album ‘Elements Beyond’, a work that includes the singles ‘Momma’s Groove’ and ‘My Reflection’.

“It goes back to quality” he replies when asked about his affiliation with the label. “Strictly Rhythm is a name people associate with quality. It has a long-standing catalogue and it’s the new house label for people like me, Quentin Harris, and these kinds of artists have built careers with quality music”.

The vibes of Strictly and Osunlade are undoubtedly in sync, so he was invited to produce their summer album Strictly Ibiza; an album full of quality summer grooves from the past and present. “The first mix is more of a deep soulful kind of thing and the second one is a club vibe” he says of the mix. “My idea was one preparing for the club and then being at the club. So one where you are having dinner, in a restaurant, at home or on the beach and the other is like, ‘yeah, let’s do it!’”

The compilation features many of Osunlade’s own productions including ‘Butterfly’ (Ron Trent’s Musicandpower Remix) a track that he is particularly proud of, as well as the new exclusive mix of ‘Pride’ (Osunlade’s Back To Africa Mix) he has just completed with Nadirah Shakoor.

When putting together this selection Osunlade planned to incorporate some new versions of older Strictly classics as well as things set to be big over the next few months. Listen out for Johnny White featuring My Favorite Robot ‘Desensitize’ (Phonogenic Remix), as well as Quentin Harris + Inaya ‘Day Do The Right Thing’ (Extended Mix); one of the stand-out tracks from Quentin’s own artist album and another unmissable moment.

Ultimately Strictly Ibiza is a quality, timeless selection that you will return to all summer long to set your mood in Ibiza or indeed, wherever you choose to spend it.

Rekids records * rekids007cd * Mr G * Still Here (Get On Down) * Tech-House * 2010-07-08 * CD

Known to his friends at Colin McBean, Mr. G has been an active producer for roughly 20 years, starting out in the DJ trio KCC, then playing as half of The Advent later in the '90s. He went solo around the turn of the millennium and has since released records mostly on Phoenix G (his own label), Oproof and Rekids. "I had known Matt (Radio Slave) for years, via mutual respect for each-others' music, so it was great to work with him," says McBean. "I truly feel that the Rekids crew do it right, which made me feel for the first time to do my first solo long player with people I loved and trust..." Still Here (Get On Down) boasts nine new tracks inspired by a variety of McBean's personal experiences, including his love of fine rum ("I'm a rum master"), racist artwork he saw on jazz record sleeves in Paris, and a former tennis partner named Ceza who introduced him to the texts of Plato. In terms of sound, the album has the same rough-edged, analog feel that characterizes many of Mr. G's productions.

Autechre is making a move for album number two in 2010. It's titled Move of Ten and will follow up their Oversteps release that came out in March.

It's definitely Autechre, as you'll know when you hear it. There 's a sort of casual but solid approach to the abstract sounds of Autechre, with both melody and the rythym fused together as one quirky beast. It's simply delicious.

Fumakilla * fkcd001 * Various Artists * 10 Years Of Fumakilla * Tech-House * 2010-07-08 * 2CD

TEN is the magic number with Berlin imprint Fumakilla! 2010 marks its tenth anniversary, and to celebrate, label owner Woody has compiled ten new, exclusive tracks from the roster, including Felipe Venegas, Livio + Roby, Valenzuela + Casarano, Leix + Ronro, Larsson, Alejandro Vivanco, Danny Fiddo, Autotune and of course Woody himself. Over the past ten years, the Fumakilla team has been weaving 1s and 0s into intricate patterns, establishing itself as a source for sexy and pumpin’ club tracks with a sophisticated, artful bend (matched by its award-winning record sleeve designs). The dance label has gained a reputation of quality over quantity, with around 40 releases (including sublabel Fumalab) in its decade of existence, allowing creativity to flow at its own pace, striving toward a certain timeless quality. This compilation’s ten hand-picked productions serve as a state-of-the-union of Fumakilla’s international crew, from mellow grooves to galloping jams, deep and techno-house.´But wait, there’s more! As you may know, Woody is not just a producer and label owner, but also a distinguished DJ, and for the compilation’s second disc, he’s mixed an audio excursion of additional tracks from Fumakilla’s back catalog. The one-hour mix serves as a balanced overview of the past ten years, including his own track-as-mission-statement “Fumakilla Funk” from 2000, his remix of Autotune’s “Dirty", plus other hits and lesser-known tracks from the likes of Jona, Paul Ritch, The Dose and Livio + Roby. Whether you are an ardent follower of the label, or are just curious for an introduction, Ten Years of Fumakilla is a perfect TEN!

Renaissance Recordings * ren58cd * Various Artists * Renaissance Master Series 16, mixed by Hernan Cattaneo * UK Progressive * 2010-07-08 * 2CD

Hernan Cattaneo presents another exciting chapter in the Renaissance Masters Series with a brand new approach…

Hernan’s return to the Masters Series in 2010 brings with it an exciting new development. This year the ever-creative South American has slowed things down to present a distinctly cosmic disco-esque take on his inimitable sound.

“I felt it was time we took a fresh direction,” says Hernan, “But, although it was always going to be alternate, I wasn’t sure just what this direction should be. So, I locked myself away and started going through loads of music for inspiration. It wasn’t till I pitched a Henry Saiz track down (and it sounded brilliant) that I hit upon the idea of dropping everything back 15-20 BPMs on the first disc.”

Entitled ‘Day’, disc one is a beautiful, shimmering ride through Cattaneo’s audio world, its musical style the perfect antithesis of two’s club-inspired ‘Night’. But what’s all the more remarkable is how he’s also managed to work five (out of a whopping eleven) original productions, remixes and edits into the mix - no mean feat considering the unique nature of the material. “I know there’s a big debate amongst dance music fans about exclusives on compilations right now, but for me it’s a purely positive objective. Just as with the alternate style of the ‘Day’ mix, it’s another way of distinguishing the album from a live club set, a statement to the fact a lot more effort has gone into the project as whole,” he challenges. “I’ll not deny working outside of the traditional comfort zone of 125 (approx) BPM was easy, but between commissioning tracks from some of my favourite producers / friends, using or adapting my own productions and sourcing some amazing music (like the fantastic Sigur Ros track that closes the ‘Day’ mix – it’s such a great song!), I think it came together really well.”

Although ‘Night’ finds Hernan in more familiar territory, it draws upon the remaining six exclusives to ensure his fresh authorship and feel of the mix continues throughout, and comes backed by tantilising gems from likes of Way Out West, Henry Saiz, Quivver and Tone Depth, to name but a few.

Defend Music * dfn80049 * Various Artists * Bergdorf Goodman Vol. 2 * Listening / Lounge * 2010-07-06 * CD

Defend Music is proud to present the second installment of the Bergdorf Goodman compilation series selected by Felix Cutillo. 14 lounge, downtempo, and world music tracks that define Bergdorf Goodman’s quality and class.

Bergdorf Goodman is the New York luxury department store standing at the crossroads of fashion at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street in New York City. Bergdorf Goodman is known throughout the world for elegance, luxury, and superior service. The store has been a New York institution since 1899.

Felix Cutillo (born in 1966 in London, England) is a New York City DJ, Music Curator, A+R Producer, and Music Compiler. Cutillo began his music career as a DJ in 1988 working in a number of Boston nightclubs and locales including stints as resident DJ at the Roxy, Club Joy, Caprice and 33. In 1992 Cutillo opened Boston Beat Records, an independent music store, on Newbury Street, the heart of Boston swank. It was one of the first record stores in the country aimed primarily at DJs. In 2002, he sold Boston Beat and created his own music label called Europa Pop. Under the Europa Pop label, Cutillo launched the Visage series (Visage I and Visage II). Artists included Ive Mendes, Christophe Goze, Swag, Shrift, Reggae Disco Rockers, Yonderboi, Adam Goldstone and others. He then joined clothing retailer Louis of Boston to launch an in-store music bar. Later that year, he compiled the "Music Bar of Louis Boston" CD, which contained artists such as Iva Zannichi, Nancy Holloway, Federico Aubele, Susan Cadagan and others. Felix Cutillo relocated to New York City in 2005 to become Bergdorf Goodman's Music Curator. He then founded Sonodea, a strategic music management consultancy that focuses on custom music solutions for a client list including high-end fashion boutiques, hotels, restaurants, and spas.

Wagon repair * wrl002 * Hrdvsion * Where Did You Just Go? * Electronica * 2010-07-06 * CD

The debut album from Hrdvsion (Nathan Jonson), a non-compromising creator of glitch-heavy electronic music, matches his esoteric vision to the more formal structures of house, techno, electro and breakbeat. Jonson’s prior releases on labels like Itiswhatitis and the upcoming Wagon Repair (run by his brother, Mathew Jonson) are known for their scattered Squarepusher-esque energy, their bleep-drenched melodies and sense of twisted urgency. ‘Where did you just go?’ seems to retain these circuit-busting tendencies yet aims more directly for the dancefloor.

“Where did you just go?” is something my girlfriend often says to me when she’s talking to me and I kind of drift off. I’ll be talking to her then just stop all of a sudden. I think the title reflects me and my music well; there’s this idea of going in one direction then suddenly pausing to dream about a completely different place...”

The album was started when Hrdvsion moved to Berlin in 2009. During a period of insecurity borne of being broke in an alien city, he opened up his laptop and sorted through hundreds of finished and half-finished songs, creating what were ostensibly remixes of the originals.

“I think I’m coming to terms with the fact I don’t have to fight against everyone,” he says. “Four years ago, I would never have released something like this. I would have felt like I was doing it for someone else and that would have bothered me a lot. But now I can see it’s still all done for me even if it doesn’t sound like it. I’ve allowed myself to be more indulgent and ditch some of the anti-social sentiment apparent in older material...”

Souvenir Music * souvenircd002 * Tiefschwarz * Chocolate * Tech-House * 2010-07-06 * CD

The night sky is a shade of “Tiefschwarz” (deep black). Or at least it has been in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world since sometime around 1997 when brothers Ali and Basti Schwarz joined rhythmic forces. Their first venture was ’24seven’, which firmly put the then sleepy Stuttgart on the map as a top nightlife destination. The deep house duo then debuted with their pertinently titled single ‘Music’ in 1998 and by 2001 the pair were expanding the parameters of modern dance music with their album ‘RAL9005+#8242;. Tiefschwarz quickly became a mainstay on the club scene. With the licensing of the album by Classic Recordings Tiefschwarz captured the attention of London, paving the way for their rise to international notoriety. Through high profile remixes they have also made a name for themselves as masters of reworking other people’s tunes. Depeche Mode (’John The Revelator’), Madonna (’Get Together’) and Spektrum (’Kinda New’) are just three of the many artists who have had the Tiefschwarz treatment. So that’s the background story. But the days of setting up their decks in the evening sun at the now legendary club ON-U in Stuttgart are now a distant memory for Tiefschwarz - you’re now more likely to find them in their studio in Berlin. And as it gets dark and the deep black of the night sets in, Tiefschwarz come to life - clubbing being their biggest vice, yet also their biggest strength. Now they’re back with their third album ‘Chocolate’, and a major leap forward for the duo: things are different now for Tiefschwarz, as this is the first release on their own label, Souvenir. Ali and Basti now have the world at their feet and are revelling in the artistic freedom that comes with their independence, as you can hear in their latest work; the tracks reflect their musical development over the last few years. Techno and house still form the foundations, yet Tiefschwarz push themselves beyond their previous limits.

!K7 * !k7262cd * Various Artists * DJ Kicks, mixed by Kode 9 * Electronica * 2010-07-06 * CD

Kode9s grasp on the throat of bass music in 2010 is almost unparalleled. His trend setting record label, Hyperdub, is in its sixth year of viral contagion; hes become a published author on the theory of sound abuse and sonic frequencies being used as weaponry in his book Sonic Warfare and his production work has mutated from an almost simplistic marriage of beats and sine waves into a fusion of dancefloor Ebonics and discordant synths. Becoming a figurehead of UK dance music hasnt been a quick process, and Kode9s single-mindedness has contributed in some way to his notoriety, but its simply his tireless work as a record label boss and AandR that has marked him out as one of the most powerful ears within the scene. Probably best known to the wider global audience as the label that gave birth to two genre defining albums from Burial, Hyperdub has become one of the most reliably testing labels out there. Just as likely to release a glut of two and a half minute beat sketches from American beat maker Samiyam or Zomby as sprawling house opuses from Brixton bass bin temptress Cooly G, the label is at the forefront of innovation and its something that he has infused into his volume of the DJ-KiCKS series.Very simply, [the mix is] just a snapshot of my DJ sets at the first half of 2010, he says calmly. Its definitely not an exploration of my musical heritage, but its not all new stuff. It probably signifies something about my relationship to dubstep that the mix only has a few dubstep tunes in it, and is instead a mix of UK funky, broken beat, dubstep, grime and some RandB. Unfortunately, I fear some listeners, because of my background, will think that all the tracks are just mutations of dubstep.Starting off in serene fashion with Nottingham producer Lones upbeat exploration of steel drum snatches on Once In A While, Kode9 dives into the percussive textures of Dutch producer Aardvarck before steering the mix into a duo of his own productions: Blood Orange and the specifically tailored exclusive single, You Dont Wash (dub) (DJ-KiCKS). Jumping off from this point into a journey through current UK funky, Kode9 aligns tracks from Hyperdub artists Cooly G and Ikonika with works by Ill Blu, Sticky, Grievous Angel, Mr Majika, Ikonika and Scratcha DVA, sampling the textures and suitably brutal drum patterns that regularly inject Londons dancefloors with such a sustained level of energy.I find the whole mix pretty danceable in different ways. Some of the stuff is around 8 or 9 years old like the Aaardvark tune Revo which Martyn introduced me to last year, he notes; And in the early 2000s, I was a big fan of Nubian Mindz as well so it was great to dig up that remix of his for the mix as I feel rhythmically things have swung back round to some of that broken techno stuff, with all its scattered snares, bent synths and maximalist percussion. Also that Maddslinky tune Cargo is an oldie, but I've basically been playing it in practically every set over the last couple of years. The first time I heard that tune played at FWD>> at Plastic People I remember it was like someone had suddenly let the sunshine into this dark basement...The tracklisting is mostly, but not all London-centric, featuring a selection of big booming riffs and asymmetic percussion possessed by a guttural sense of forcefulness. Cooly G's Phat Si really is one of those tracks for me; its just a timeless, mean, deadly roller and is effortlessly a Hyperdub classic. Producers like Lone and Zomby definitely have a magic touch and Mala, for me is like a tropical island in an ocean of dubstep sewage. On this mix Kode9 surfs through those artists and productions that sideswipe you in an unexpected moment of surrealist realisation. Whether its being brought by a track bringing the sunshine carnival vibe to a Shoreditch basement or by the sheer level of production and temperament that a producer pours into each of their tracks. Veering from the taught and poignant snare snap of Morgan Zarates M.A.B. he flips from the troubled soul of Rozzi Daimes falsetto on Dirty Illusions to the bruised rhythm of JDaVeY and on into the advanced rhythm science of Terror Danjah and Headhunters breakout 808 anthem under his Addison Groove alias, Footcrab, distilling some of the more powerful strains of modern UK dance music culminating in the big moody tombstone of The Bug and Flo Dans Run.I love the sour RandB tracks of Rozzie Dame and Jay Davey in the middle. If only more pop music sounded like that he notes tangentially. The first and second halves [of the mix] are pretty typical of my sets over the last year. The little dream sequence in the middle, I only get to do when the vibe feels right and people look capable of moving to more downbeat stuff instead of just standing around and nodding their heads.I started DJing around 19 years ago and I dont know I just think that every few years I get a musical epiphany from an intense experience in a club or in something I hear that fills me with energy, information and inspiration to produce and DJ. After each one I spend the next few years trying to decipher what happened in that singular moment. And sonically thats what Kode9s DJ-KiCKS does: attempt to decipher the tangled state of UK dance music in 2010.

Cocoon Recordings * corcd023 * Various Artists * Cocoon Compilation J * Techno * 2010-07-02 * CD

When the then still young Frankfurt label Cocoon Recordings discovered the long-playing format with its Compilation A in Summer 2000, probably nobody could have, even approximately, foreseen the success story of this series. For ten years now, the cocoon-style declination of the alphabet is a guarantor for high-class and exclusively produced floor burners by the international Techno and House elite, and, beyond that, a reliable indicator for the stylistic bandwidth of contemporary electronic dance music. And even with the previous editions A to I having set the bar damn' high, the J edition starts with a true musical sensation, as the opener "Cocoon Dark Dub" comes from nobody less than Moritz von Oswald. "Those who - even just rudimentary - have followed the evolution of electronic music over the last twenty years, know about the outstanding importance of von Oswald's timeless classics like "Domina", "M-4" or the whole Basic Channel series. Insofar, "Cocoon Dark Dub" is maybe the nicest birthday present at all, and an absolute honour for our label." (Sven Väth) So, initially, it's the heartbeat of Dub Techno that pulsates through a lonely piano and noise fractals, and club world keeps its breath for a good eight minutes. However, the Compilation J literally puts out all the stops over the following 110 minutes playtime and shows what modern electronic dance music has to offer in these times. The Dial impresario Pantha Du Prince from Hamburg is celebrating crystalline ice dance ("Bolder"), while Cécille label head Nick Curly, with his sensual Tribal House, is feasting the most compact form of Disco Boogie that one can imagine ("Keep On"). With "SBooty", the Kompakt ambassador DJ Koze, also from Hamburg, is flabbergasting the audience by combining virtually incompatible elements. Improvised horn licks are whirring through a flickering resonating body while the bass kick is filling up the tropic ambient air. However, the invariably Cocoon policy to always support interesting newcomers becomes visible in the contribution of Basti Grub from the Rhine Neckar area, whose label Höhenregler is well-known for several musical insider tips in the past. "Sick" is ascending into your brain immediately with its melodic high-frequency hook line and mysterious vocals, matching perfectly to the melancholic playfulness of the tracks by Guy Gerber. Deep Dish member Ali Shirazinia aka Dubfire and the Parisian Popof are the ones to prove impressively that you virtually can't go wrong with stringent Hypno Techno and a diaphragm-shaking bass drum. Besides the above-mentioned, the J compilation holds such well-known producers like Loco Dice, Extrawelt, Reboot and last not least long-time Cocoon companion Ricardo Villalobos, whose 12-minutes-long dance on the echo-filled "Humusweg" once again draws the bow to the Basic Channel sound from another side, and leaves much room for own visions in between the pulsing metronome of the bass line. In any case, the history of electronic dance music has not been outtold so far.

Cocoon Recordings * cormix030 * Various Artists * Party Animals, mixed by Marco Carola + Nick Curly * Tech-House * 2010-07-02 * 2CD

For the fourth year running Cocoon Recordings gives a forecast on the upcoming Ibiza Season with the latest in its Summer Mix series. After having such renowned DJs as Dubfire, Loco Dice, André Galluzzi and Chris Tietjen, the Cocoon team were able to play another well-known DJ ace from their sleeve: Marco Carola. The Naples-born DJ/Producer brought Italy onto the map of uncompromising Techno with his strictly ltd edition releases during the Nineties, but is also one of the protagonists of the breakthrough of reduced Techno-Funk, having released on Richie Hawtin's Plus 8 label and his own platform Domestic.Minimal.Noise over recent years.

With his mix, Carola illustrates the perfect party night on Amnesia's main floor in a sultrily and percussive yet always sexy and elegant form of Minimal Funk. In particular, Marco Carola gives a major platform to breakthrough artists, like the Spaniard Kobaalt or the Reisak Corporation from Venice. The mix builds with a constant intensity and his finale has you ready to throw your arms in the air with some familiar tracks by Martin Buttrich ("Hoochie Mama") and Layo + Bushwacka ("The Longest Day", highlighted here through the Audiofly remix).

The second disc is taken up by the superb Nick Curly from Mannheim. Curly has already proved himself with his productions for Plastic City, 8 Bit and Cocoon as well as his own label Cécille Records, which he runs together with Marc Scholl, he is a DJ who stands for the powerful rejuvenation of deep House and his passion for this comes out in everything he does. With his impressively energetic set, Curly demonstrates that soulful vocals and solid, hypnotic house make great bedfellows. From the off the mix displays the depth of character in Curly’s selection from the percussive Power House of "Get Your Space" by producer team Phil Weeks vs. Krakatoa through the jazziness of Gorge ("Makena") and onto the dubby excursion of Horacio ("Taberna del Funk") there is a wealth of quality on offer here. Butch’s wildpitch style ‘No Worries’ and Curly’s own brand of new disco funk on offer in ‘Keep On’ further add to richness of the mix and by the time you reach the closing bars of Burridge and Dekay’s ‘Wongel’ it is clear to see why Cocoon were so keen to have Curly onboard.

Cocoon have been instrumental in the Ibiza season for over a decade now and this is yet another marker of their constant importance and relevance. It’s also a damn good compilation!

Mole Listening Pearls * mole096-2 * Naomi * The Big Shapes * Listening / Lounge * 2010-07-01 * CD

The British star producers Xenomania (Pet Shop Boys, Sugababes) recently asked Naomi for a sample (they got it); Naomi's three year old fan favourite "Needle On The Record" is a constant seller in the US iTunes Store; their Myspace and Facebook pages are brimming with love letters from Russia, Mexico, Texas or Taiwan. In their native Germany they are still something of a best-kept secret, regardless of consistently euphoric press reviews, but this might well change with The Big Shapes, their new, fifth Album on Mole Listening Pearls. The abundance of ideas, the songwriting, the attitude – everything has grown bigger, louder and sharper in the Naomi universe. Bernd Lechler and Nico Tobias still show the odd fit of incurable melancholy, but this time any world weariness comes clad in choruses that make you want to shout "Holy Kylie!". The overall sound of the album reminds one of... well, nothing else, really. Massive backbeats carry scratchy guitar riffs, buzzing synths cut through gentle electric piano lines as the Berlin duo digs deep into the pop vocabulary of the past four decades. "Fujiyama“ is an electro blues with elegiac Melodica and a downright symphonic final, “Candy Floss“ is a lazily stomping contemporary funk pop monster, and what happens in “Hello Fever“ after a soaring cosmic intro could almost be labeled as prog rock.<br><br>The thing is, Naomi never play it safe here. They seem to intentionally provoke the coolness police, casting away any tasteful cleverness of comparable indietronic acts and, smiling quietly, they lay it on thick. The Big Shapes draws on the forbidden side of the Eighties (the Phil Collins drums on “Morning Belle“), mischievously quotes heavy metal guitar lines (as for a few bars in “Dragon Tree“), and makes nods toward Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode as well as Chic and the psychedelic Beatles. Still, like any great fun, The Big Shapes is propelled by great seriousness. “First Things First“ gleefully exaggerates the disillusioned pragmatism of the noughties, “Hello Fever“ sounds like a feverish dream about the financial crisis, “Sleep“ ponders the fact that only those who don’t act at all make no mistakes. Behind the stoically grooving psychedelic pop of “Don‘t Die Again OK“ there lurks a childhood nightmare, and the vocoder-based final track “I‘ll Be The Past“, possibly the most touching song of the album, is a humble, obviously autobiographically inspired meditation on mortality, almost a prayer.<br><br>Reviewing their last album, Aquarium, Rolling Stone magazine described Naomi as “wondrous“. They still are. Just this time with a bang.<br><br><i><b>Naomi talks about the album: </b><a href="http://www.mole.de/eng/Artists/naomi-the-big-shapes-interview"> The Big Shapes</a></i>

It is time for a change, time to reflect deeply, time to rethink, time to remember. We now have the chance to form a higher state of consciousness.

Less anger, less fear, more happy, more connected, more in tune and more faithful; to feel soulfulness in every day, in every hour, in every minute, in every moment. We can get an mental ability to sympathize with the people, animals and the nature around us. We are all children of god - a wonderful creative and peaceful power. We must respect and protect the manifestations of this power on our planet and in our minds. You can discover and realize them in every being like a child, an animal, a flower, a leaf, a tree and in the essence of music. Try to make a small step into this new direction. The intention of "Aeon In Motion" is to reflect and carry a part of this in the form of music. Jens Buchert creates "Electronic Deep Moods Music" since more than 20 years. He rightly gets the nickname "Wizard Of Sounds". He lives secluded as a nature lover in the countryside in the southwest of germany.

Wax´n´Soul * wns0162 * Various Artists * City Beach Club 5, mixed DJ Ping * Listening / Lounge * 2010-07-01 * CD

After 4 very successful volumes, hitting the top of the German Chill Out Charts, it´s time for the 5th issue of "City Beach Club". Peter Heberling aka. DJ Ping, who was also responsible for all the former volumes and even the well-known compilation series "EAST" (in cooperation with the famous design hotel in Hamburg), again compiled a unique tracklist and created a mix with an awesome flow.

Starting in a relaxed way with tracks by Blue Pilots Project, Razoof or Deeper Sublime, the first half of the CD transports a very laid-back feeling. With track no. 7, the Dubnova Remix of Marga Sols "Dali Sonuvam", the first house beats flush in and the vibe slowly moves towards moodful and hypnotising deep house tracks. With the incredible Lemon Popsicle Remix of Yellos "Vicious Games" and further tracks by deep-house don Ben Watt, Aki Bergen or Sergio Fernandez, Ping even raises the bar and when the last sounds of Ralf Hildenbeutels "Warriors Of Foumban" hush, the listener remains in a perfect relaxed summer mood with a big smile on his face. Must-have for the coming summer!

Curle Records * curle025 * Various Artists * Curle 25 - So Far (So Good) * Tech-House * 2010-07-01 * CD + Bonus CD

We wanted to mark our 25th release by doing a special compilation, looking back to what happened since the launch of the label in September 2006. The result is a double cd, with the first disc being an unmixed overview of the biggest tracks released on Curle to date. Hence the title 'So Far (So Good)'.

CD Two is a data disc with over 4 hours of music in mp3-format. Anthony Collins, Peter Van Hoesen and label founder Fader all made a DJ-mix including nothing but tracks from the Curle catalogue, featuring quite a few unreleased tracks, remixes and edits especially made for this compilation.

M-Plant * mpm8cd * Robert Hood * Omega * Techno * 2010-07-01 * CD

Robert Hood returns after last year's 'Minimal Nation' re-issue with his new artist album Omega. The album is based on the 1971 classic science fiction film, 'The Omega Man' starring Charlton Heston and derived from Richard Matheson's 1954 novel 'I Am Legend' (which was recently re-adapted to the big screen). The album is not intended as an exact soundtrack to run alongside the original film, but Hood was heavily influenced by the movie and has used it as his inspiration.

This album's concept is a long-held vision of Hood's and the film's stimulus has presented itself both musically here, and even spiritually for him, since he watched it as a child. Its themes appear even more relevant today and continue to haunt: "it's definitely metaphoric," he says "and if we don't heed the signs, this is where we'll end up. We live in a society where we just consume. We just take. We don't operate on the concept of giving". The film resonated with him down the years and there are many parallels between the post apocalyptic world portrayed in the film and parts of Detroit where he grew up. "You can look at downtown Detroit at night after the nine to five have migrated home and it turns into a ghost town," he muses. "You had abandoned buildings during the crack epidemic and this progressive city had these 'zombies' walking the street. Detroit is a prophetic vision of the sign of things to come."

Whilst the brooding 'Towns That Disappeared Completely' and laser-strafed 'War In The Streets' certainly brings these comparisons together, the album still remains a work of science fiction, albeit one rooted in decaying urban realism as opposed to otherworldly fantasy. Tracks such as 'Are You God?' delve into the 'messiah complex' of Charlton Heston's last man on earth battle to save humankind from the infected inhabitants of earth whilst the album's preceding single 'Alpha' is dancefloor minimalism at its finest - yet another lesson in stripped down machine funk. Floating between cinematic experimentalism 'The Plague (Cleansing Maneuvers)', low-key minimal grooves 'The Workers of Iniquity' and pure dancefloor adrenalin rush 'Omega (End Times)' Robert Hood gives us another minimal masterpiece. As Hood himself concludes. "This movie is an exercise in faith. Everybody is dead. Through all this adversity there is still hope but man has to repent. This is a message of hope and through the adversity people will begin to look at a higher force."

Chusma Records * cr001 * Various Artists * Cumbia! Bestial * Electronica * 2010-07-01 * CD

Cumbia – a musical style few had heard of until not so long ago. But since 2008 at the latest, the Carribean offbeat groove has been explosively rediscovered at clubs and festivals in the USA and Europe. Two-four time tunes from 1960s Columbia are being taken into the studio to be remixed with electronic beats, dubbing basslines, scratches and samples, creating a new bastard style we call Cumbia Bestial! It´s the first to assemble both an international cast of noted producers and DJs and promising newcomers from the “underground” of a new urban latino club scene.

Diynamic Music * diynamiccd04 * Ost + Kjex * Cajun Lunch * Tech-House * 2010-06-25 * CD

With a sound that straddles electro, funk, disco and house, Oslo based duo Ost + Kjex returnwith their second long-player ‘Cajun Lunch’ on Hamburg based imprint, Diynamic.

Having released their cheese fixated (and indeed sampled) debut album ‘Some Cheese but not all Cheese comes from the Moon’ in 2004 the food obsessed Norwegian pair have released a multitude of EPs and remixes on labels such as Crosstown Rebels, Planetnoise, Modular, Snick Snack, Punkt, Dialect and now Diynamic Music and played in venues and festivals all over the world including Fabric (UK), Panorama Bar (DE), Moog (ES), Fusion Festival (DE), Hove Festival (NO), Nu Music (NO) and Noveau Casino (France) to name a few.

The debut album, to their big surprise awarded them a nomination for best electronica album at the Norwegian Grammys and the pair continued to develop their sound on releases such as ‘More Songs About Cheese And Revolutionary Tarts’, ‘How Not To Be A Biscuit’ and ‘Boston Food Strangler’.

Since then the food boys have awoken, got their hands on some serious sounds and started shredding out tunes aimed at the dance floor. In the summer of 2008 they stumbled upon Hamburg based Croatian Solomun, resulting in a collaboration track called "Federgewicht"(Featherweight) and the beginning of their association with Diynamic whilst only last summer the pair contributed vocals on the dance floor hit ‘Summertime’ by UK producer Jamie Jones.

In between live shows and remixing the busy food geeks have now prepared their second course for your delectation. As the title suggests ‘Cajun Lunch’ mixes elements of delta blues and bayou basslines into their organic house sound, especially on the guitar filled ‘Bluecheeseblues Parts 1 and 2’ but also in the general laidback atmosphere that envelopes every track. From the opening sun-kissed grooves of ‘Mosambiquetravelplan’ featuring Bugge Wesseltoft on piano to the sexed-up funk of ‘Continental Lover’ and the deep house tones of‘The Yellow Man’ the boys continue to conspire with the album’s guest vocalist, Tracee Meyn.

Providing a juxtaposition to the pairs’ house foundation and Mr. Ost’s falsetto lead vocals, Tracee becomes an integral part of ‘Cajun Lunch’s funk filled sound giving it that extra spice to their production relish. On the darker and minimal edged ‘A New Deal’ and bassline driven ‘Seraphine’ Tracee is further assisted by members of her gospel choir who combine to give ‘Cajun Lunch’ a fuller, more rounded sound whilst tracks like ‘We Got Ticket To Moon’ and ‘Bluebird’ see the guys strip everything down to the bare essentials and groove with their machines, taking their house sound into dark, sweat filled boxes the world over.

‘Cajun Lunch’ is house music but not as we know it (and certainly with more cheeses). Whilst ‘The Yellow Man’ spins a shimmering groove that sees Tracee sparring with Mr. Ost’s lovelorn delivery we also find the duo’s production dexterity in full bloom on the closing ‘Lets Set The Time’ which takes a slo-mo house groove into deep dub territory with Mr. Ost providing a dreamlike vocal over the top, lulling us in to a chilled, hammock-strewn slumber.

Ost + Kjex’s love for electronic music still takes the boys wherever the cheese is fresh and the beats are crunchy: from the Reggiano Parmesan factory in Verona to your local watering hole, churning out theatrical performances or fucked-up live sets for the dance floor. This summer will be no exception as you will find them gigging in clubs, live venues and festivals across the world both as a duo and also featuring "The Traces" gospel choir.

After the phenomenal success story of the previous 2 deadmau5 ‘At Play’ releases, we are proud to present Vol. 3, a superb selection of deadmau5’s more deep-tech-minimal sound perfect for today’s ‘ears’.

Bursting onto the scene in 2006 – his rise to the top was swift + well deserved, grabbing the producer of the year accolade and accumulating a wave of Beatport number 1’s + being the highest new entry in DJ Mag’s top 100 poll @ # 10 this year rising to # 6 ahead of some very established names.

Compost Records * cpt3542 * TJ Kong + Nuno Dos Santos * After Dark My Sweet * Deep House * 2010-06-24 * CD

Tell me, when was the last time you fell in love with an album? Making you want to hit the replay button as soon as the last song was finished, just to avoid losing that warm glow inside your head?

‘After dark, my sweet’, the fantastic debut by Dutch duo TJ Kong + Nuno dos Santos, will do the trick just nicely. The twosome prove that deep grooves and song structure don't have to clash with a genuine club feeling.

“Call us romantics, but hasn’t the love been lost from a lot of dance music?” TJ Kong (Erwin van Moll) asks rhetorically. To which Nuno adds “We wanted to bring back some of that love. And we wanted to make an album that’s not limited to the dance floor”.

In an ocean of formulaic techno, preset house music and festival one hit wonders their eleven track debut indeed is a flashing bright red beacon to hold on to. Music made without any stress or time pressure, which captures all the emotions the duo experienced, be it joy, loss or love.

During the recording sessions, Nuno (who lives in Utrecht) spent a fortune on train tickets to make the weekly journey to Erwin’s Eindhoven-based studio. While the music often came out naturally, finding the right vocalists proved a greater challenge.

One voice was easy: Robert Owens. The American house legend sung their 2008 club hit ‘Merging’ to higher grounds. You'll find the addictive song in an alternative version on the album. Owens lives in London nowadays, where TJ + Nuno also recorded ‘Where were you’. The vocals were done in less than a day. “Owens is such an incredible professional”, TJ Kong smiles. “Before you know it he has recorded 30 vocal tracks…..and they’re exactly what’s needed”.

The boys also tracked down Nigerian singer Nicolette in London. Most people will know from her contributions to Massive Attack’s second album ‘Protection’, but Nuno and TJ mostly remembered her distinguished voice from Nicolette's ground-breaking album ‘Now is early’ which came out in the early nineties on cult label Shut up And Dance. Nicolette's voice has a bit of Billie Holiday in it and both realized she would fit perfectly alongside the warm grooves of their album. Just listen to the moody mid-tempo disco track ‘Birthday’, or the powerful chords of ‘Something Happened’ and it’s hard to disagree with them. “Like good whiskey her voice might take some getting used to”, explains Nuno. “But after a few listens you’re completely hooked.”

Others might recognize the voice of Jemeni in the spoken words of ‘Once Upon a Rhyme’. The Canadian hip hop poet and radio host gave thousands of DJs a knock on the head with Nick Holder’s ‘No more dating DJs’. Jemeni knew exactly what to do with the pulse from the duo’s machines.

Spunk from fellow Compost band Marbert Rocel opens the album. Her clear, vibrant voice fits like a glove around the quirky sounds and driving percussion of ‘This Time’. “It was a joy to work with her”, TJ Kong looks back. “On some songs we worked for a very long time before we were completely satisfied but ‘This Time’ was done in a breeze.

The final chord of the album stars befriended Eindhoven musician Edward Capel. His melancholic clarinet ends ‘Emerald bay’, an eight minute dubby groove that sticks to your ears like good ganja.

TJ Kong + Nuno dos Santos have put all their love into ‘After Dark, My Sweet’ (with remarkable artwork by Amsterdam graffiti hero Delta). And it pays off. “I think our secret is our diversity”, Nuno reflects on their successful cooperation. “Erwin is very experienced as a musician. I learned a lot from him over recent years.” “Nuno knows exactly what works on a dance floor”, TJ Kong bounces the compliment. “And he’s very straight forward. That helped a lot during the recording process.”

What about the poetic album title? “It’s from an old film noir”, TJ Kong (who is a huge cinema buff) reveals. “Hopefully it sparks the imagination of people who listen to our album.” He moves a bit closer when he adds: “And it has that magical element of love in it.”

Get Physical Music * gpmcd034 * Various Artists * Body Language Vol. 9, mixed by DJ Hell * Tech-House * 2010-06-24 * CD

DJ Hell bestrides modern techno like a colossus: he's more than just a producer or a DJ, he's an icon, too big and individual a personality to be accommodated by any one micro-scene. Hell doesn't just represent a type of music, he represents a whole lifestyle, aesthetic and worldview – and Body Language Vol. 9 is perhaps the closest any disc has yet come to capturing that totality.

Ostgut Tontraeger * ostgutcd13 * Various Artists * Berghain 04 (Ben Klock) * Techno * 2010-06-24 * CD

Klock follows on from André Galluzzi, Marcel Dettmann and Len Faki in mixing a Berghain compilation, which will be released on the club’s in house label Ostgut Ton on June 28. His distinct sound – which combines relentless, industrial beats with a melodic sensibility cultivated in his upbringing as a classically trained musician – has become synonymous with the rise of Berghain to the world’s clubbing Mecca for anyone with a penchant for techno

Those who live within an Easyjet flight of the techno capital should also pencil June 12 into the diary, with Klock set to host the mix launch party on home turf.

The press release, written by German journo/DJ/label boss Gerd Janson, states: “When it comes to Berlin’s Berghain and its myth, we all know the deal by now: techno, concrete, marathon dances. Fact or fiction, Berghain 04 comes in the nick of time. It is impossible to reduce Ben Klock’s musical vision and especially his work as a DJ. Stereotypes and close-minded genre definitions have never been wished-for by the protagonists (Berghain and Klock) anyway and they won’t help you here.

“Klock turns all these ingredients into one long and harmonic blend. Without any sign of hectic or nervous breaks, but not without thrilling moments, peaks or valleys, turning points, Berghain 04 primes its listener for the climax of a long night out: the disappearance of space, time and the outside world. Akin to his album “One”, Ben Klock combines his classic appreciation of music, melody and hidden hook lines with the anonymity of solid machine sounds.

“These comparisons might be drawn with a worn-out pen, just like all the insufficient adjectives used to describe Berghain’s magic, but that is exactly what is achieved here. Ben Klock gets effortlessly and truthfully to the heart of a sound, a feeling and most of all an aesthetic. Berghain techno soul.”

Soundcolours * sc0120 * Blank + Jones * Relax Edition Five * Listening / Lounge * 2010-06-24 * 2CD

It´s going to be a hot summer.

Which album would you take with you on a lonely island?

Well, this question is no longer really relevant in times of ipods. At least technically. But even with almost every song ever recorded being available anytime and anywhere, there still seems to exsist that personal favourite summer album every year.

Is it because you heard it on your summer break all the time or maybe it simply didn´t leave the cd player of your house all summer and supplied the soundtrack to those great barbeques with your friends at home. The RELAX album series is exactly that kind of category. Also the latest release, RELAX Edition Five, is on it´s way to become a classic this summer. After having special guests like Keane, the Pet Shop Boys and Sarah McLachlan on the previous RELAX releases, this time they invited some more illustrious guests to take that RELAX spirit to the next level. The french chanson star Coralie Clement. A close friend of the production team, the 2009 departed Mike Francis, Also their long time companion Bobo The album´s 1st. single feat. the balearic legend Cathy Battistessa. Nobody represents "The Spirit of Ibiza" better than Cathy, who wrote and performed songs like "More Than Ever People","Speck of Gold" or "Breather". Often named "The Voice of Café del Mar", she is far more than that. With this great variety of brilliant guest vocalists the RELAX series is as versatile as compilations like Café del Mar. Buddha Bar or Hotel Costes, but their true greatness is owned to the facts that we are talking about full artist albums.

Bring on the good vibes with RELAX Edition Five!!

The new album from Nina Nastasia, Outlaster is an achievement of staggering beauty by an artist of pervasive, quiet influence undergoing a sea change in musical form. Though the signposts of Nastasia's sensibility are still present: songwriting impeccable but not fussy, lyrics intelligent and provocative but not overly enamored with their own cleverness, her work continues to startle and intrigue even Nina Nastasia obsessives.

Mole Listening Pearls * mole095-2 * Audio Lotion * Bad Timing * Listening / Lounge * 2010-06-18 * CD

If Audio Lotion's new album were the soundtrack for a crime, then the latter would have been committed out of love and passion in self-defense: our hero was in the wrong place, at the wrong time, too often - well, "Bad Timing" – and he knows too much... Mr. Gamma is on the run, in a silver-grey Jaguar XKR, racing along the Côte d'Azur from Nice via Eze sur Mer towards Monaco. At the wheel there’s a cross between Jason Bourne, 007, and Ethan Hunt, betrayed by friends and foes, hunted by his past. Escape, start anew somewhere, or face his pursuers and wipe them out? In a speedboat across the rough Mediterranean Sea to Algier. There, those dogs almost get him! Through the deadly Sahara into the orient. Waingro, an old contact in Beirut, provides him with the necessary gadgets. The chase continues with 140 BPM! Run, hide, or die!<br><br>Such scenes are being conjured up before the mind’s eye when hearing the album. But Audio Lotion add a good measure of irony to their play with the spy movie genre. The title "Bad Timing“ and the visual design of the album showing the spy who didn’t „come in from the cold“, but „tripped at the most unfortunate moment“, already suggest that there’s not always an invincible hero à la James Bond behind the wheel, but sometimes a Maxwell Smart or an Inspector Clouseau. One is reminded of a likeable, but slightly awkward, protagonist who, at the decisive moment, lacks the necessary quantum of luck – and, well, timing. Every once in a while, the music picks up that theme, too, and produces a rhythmical hiccup, an odd melody or a not completely serious bit of movie dialogue. And although all this is served with the necessary touch of ‚amusement’, deep inside, one never really doubts that the hero of the stories the album tells is the coolest guy in the business.<br><br>For more than ten years, Audio Lotion have been inspiring the press to storms of superlatives: „The perfect lounge sound“, „Music that belongs to the daily needs like eating and drinking“, „Absolutely necessary for heart and ears“, „Refreshing“, „Pleasant“, „Relaxing“, „Sensual“, and „Sexy“. And as the icing on the cake, Audio Lotion’s music found its way into the queen of lifestyle TV series: Sex and the City.<br><br>However, their fifth album "Bad Timing" deserved even more superlatives: the duo from Zurich puts into motion a one-hour power plant of feelings. A musical thriller that sends a neuronal firework from the brain stem into the cortex and produces fantastic images and stories. "Bad Timing“ is eustress with its most positive (scientifically proven) effects on body and soul. The album motivates and stimulates.<br><br>The biggest compliment for Audio Lotions' new album could be described as "inspiration". "Bad Timing“ has the potential for a masterpiece, the potential for inspiring and influencing other artists in their work. The energy of a piece of art creates new energy for new works of art. Be it design, painting, sculptures, literature, music or film. Not only artists in a creative crisis should free up front row space for Audio Lotion’s "Bad Timing" in their first-aid CD shelf.<br><br><i><b>Audio Lotion talks about the album: </b><a href="http://www.mole.de/eng/Artists/audio-lotion-bad-timing-interview.html"> Bad Timing</a></i>

Dubsided * dsdcd002 * Various Artists * Dubsided, mixed by Subskrpt * House * 2010-06-17 * CD

2010 sees the return of one of our favourite labels, dubsided...a label that is regarded as one of the most influential and pioneering in current dance music history. With dave 'switch' taylor at the helm, the dubsided ethos was always going to be forward-thinking, quality house music; it was clear from those early solid groove, modeler and induceve releases that something special was on the horizon. Quirky, glitchy, raw house yet always retaining funk and groove...they still sound as fresh today as they did back then. With 34 tracks (strung together seamlessly by new signing subskrpt) you can hear how far dubsided has shaped and molded the current dance music landscape. The now classic 'a bit patchy' was an early dubsided release before the label went on to nurture and develop such talent as herv , sinden, jesse rose, duke dumont and trevor loveys whose 'organ grinder' became a huge club anthem. Having been at the forefront of the bass-heavy scene for the last few years dubsided now moves onto another chapter with a new double a-sided ep featuring a brand new solid groove track and the debut single from latest discovery subskrpt... Both are included here in this sublime, textured mix and once again prove why dubsided is to be held in such high-regard; the label that produces sounds and artists like no other has delivered again....

Ninja Tune * zencd158 * The Herbaliser * Herbal Tonic (Best Of) * Electronica * 2010-06-17 * CD

Welcome please, the Herbaliser. One of the key acts if not the key act of the middle ten years of Ninja Tune’s two decade journey, from 1995’s debut Remedies until their last album for Ninja, 2005’s Take London, Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba used their time with Ninja Tune to effortlessly combine their love of hip hop, funk, jazz and sixties film soundtracks into a widescreen, musical approach to the beat that was as raw as it was intelligent.

From the old skool referencing “Gadget Funk,” through the spy theme atmospherics of “The Missing Suitcase,” the cartoon psychedelia of the previously unreleased “March of the Dead Things,” and the epic reach of both “Stranded On Earth” (from 2008’s Same as It Never Was on !K7) and the beautiful “A Song For Mary,” Herbal Tonic shows the musical mastery that a pair of hip hop heads from South West London developed.

Their choice of musical collaborators also shows their love for and understanding of the craft of rapping. From Jean Grae (formerly What What), who worked with them across five of their albums – and who they plucked from relative obscurity in the mid-nineties New York underground – to the likes of MF Doom and Roots Manuva (long before either was a cool name to drop), all of the Herbaliser’s choices show a love for a characterful, distinctive voice as well as rock solid technique (a modus operandi which also served them well when choosing the remarkable Seaming To to vocal the title track to 2002’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes”).

The third string to the Herbaliser bow is, of course, their live show. Not content with being great DJs, and once again long before the trend for dance acts going ‘live,’ Wherry and Teeba put together a crack group of musicians (many with a strong background in jazz and soul) to bring their recordings into full-on technicolor, three dimensional life. The results were so stunning tha the band have recorded two live albums, represented here by excellent versions of “Mr Chombee Has The Flaw” and “Ginger Jumps The Fence.”

The package is rounded out by a remarkable DJ Food remix, “Mrs Chombee Takes The Plunge,” lovingly pieced together by PC, sometime schoolmate of Wherry. It rounds out the picture this compilation draws of the Herbaliser because there is also a “family” element to their world view, a gang of unruly musical miscreants who started out dreaming of New York and ended up helping to build a New London.

These Days Records * td08 * Various Artists * Argy Presents D.Edge Sao Paolo * Tech-House * 2010-06-17 * CD

Unique personality and unquestionably charismatic DJ/producer, Argy, has managed within 5 years to become a leading figure in the most recent wave of house music producers. 25 years old now, and considered one of the most diverse and impressive young artists on the scene, with his latest project Argy presents one of his favourite clubs in the world, D.EDGE, via a Mix CD on his much talked about These Days label.Located in futuristic yet classic and tumultuous Sao Paulo, Brazil, D.Edge is believed to be one of the leading and most influential clubs of the past few years. Its design and artistic direction alongside its very passionate and dedicated following have made D.Edge an institution for modern house and techno music, having high profile guests performing throughout the whole year. After the club’s invitation for Argy to perform there and visit the city for a short period of time, a strong bond was created, and the artist felt the need to express this enthusiasm through his most immediate medium. In this mix, Argy does what he does best, which is to effortlessly combine old classics with a modern club sound, in the process creating a remarkable sonic energy. The musical journey is mixed in a more natural and less computerized “real club DJ mix” style, with wonderful dynamics, key perfect mixing and with a music lover’s sensitivity, combining a broad spectrum of different colours and textures throughout the CD, whilst always remaining constantly connected to the venue’s sound. The audio collage, featuring Kerri Chandler, Motor City Drum Ensemble, David Alvarado and Aril Brikha to name but a few, leads you through at least four different mind states from darker Detroit melodies, to percussive DJ tools, Classic NY house and finally euphoric techno.

Klik Records * klcd063 * Chris Nemmo * Nautilus Project * Electronica * 2010-06-17 * CD

Its around 6 years since the release of Chris Nemmo debut album Forbidden Paths on Klik Records. The the Athenean label proudly presents the long awaiting album by the talented Greek Artist. After experimenting through different electronic dance genres and releasing material in several record labels worldwide, Chris Nemmo (a.k.a Christos Panagiotopoulos) presents his second personal album, this time creating a nu-disco/funk amalgamation. The album consists of several different aspects of the scene, employing dirty funky basslines, reminiscent vintage melodies and atmospheric vocals in an effort to simulate a warm analog perception of the disco groove and aesthetics.

This new work with the title ‘The Nautilus Project’, contains collaborations with several artists, who provided their unique own touch to the completion of the project. Ares Duke (a.k.a Aris Champsas) worked in several tracks alongside Chris Nemmo, offering ideas on composition, performing electric bass, guitar parts and vocals and expanding the creativity of the initial compositions. Another exceptional, well known vocalist and former singer of the band Film, Etten (a.k.a Eleni Tzavara), after having collaborations with well known producers in her bio (Mikael Delta, Coti K), works for the second time with Chris on the track ‘Half Human’, writing the lyrics and performing the vocal line. Finally, Thalia P (a.k.a Thalia Palivida), Thommy Apergi and Helena Koursou, three different vocalists from three different music backgrounds provide a variety of vocal characteristics and create a blend of genres presented throughout this work.

The Nautilus project features 11 unreleased tracks of cosmic house, nu disco, funk and pop. Once more the production quality is massive , providing great musical soundscapes beautiful for the head and feet as well as plenty of solid grooves to offer DJs, and enough personality to make for a completely satisfying home listen.

Sedsoul * sed0003 * Leroy Burgess * Throwback Volume II : Sugar Hill 83-86 * Funk + Soul * 2010-06-16 * CD

Leroy Burgess is a shining example of an artist who, in the face of musical fad and change, remains true to his style, originality and craft; not selling his soul to remain in the spotlight, and is constantly fresh, up-front, vibrant, and rightly popular. Having family ties with Ronald and Robert Bell of Kool + the Gang fame, it's no surprise that Leroy sought to express himself musically. Since the late 1960s Leroy has grown, expanded, developed and embraced musical change but has always maintained the unique 'Burgess factor' throughout: Unique, yet able to adapt to all the changes that have directed popular music. From the sweet harmony days with Black Ivory in the „60s and early „70s, working with the ionic Salsoul label as well as working with Inner Life, Phreek, Bumble Bee Unlimited, The Peter Jacques Band, Dazzle, and Logg, he majorly scored for Fonda Rae with her “Over Like A Fat Rat” in the 1980s and the Universal Robot Band+#8223;s anthemic “Barely Breaking Even”, a track that still commands respect and holds court on classier dance floors around the world. Leroy's more recent forays into deep house with the likes of Chez Demier have been superb.

Leroy+#8223;s latest album, “Throwback Volume 2: Sugar Hill 1983 – 1986”, is not a rose-tinted trip down Memory Lane, instead Leroy has selected some of his choice 80s compositions and showcases them for 2010, perfectly crafted for a market that is varied and diverse. Leroy has kept all of the original verve of the Sugar Hill days, and has presented to us fresh, new and upfront tracks which recognise contemporary music's ability to encompass - but not mimic - tradition. Still using all his unique and familiar riffs, chords and arrangements, the songs are not throwaway, but deliciously rich, and made to savour. “Don't Stop” complete with slap bass, and the anthemic “Doin' Me Tonight” competes shoulder to shoulder with 80s-styled belters such as “Shinin'”, “Once You Got Me Goin'” and the killer groove of “Can't Keep On”. Leroy Burgess nods to the past, embraces today, and proves beyond all doubt that „Endurance+#8223; is his middle name. Burgess invites you to sample his fine wine, yet in doing so sows the seeds for a future crop. If you were to ask anyone who has ever met, had dealings with, or known this man will be able to sum him up in one word: Gentleman. Many would add legend to that too. There is only one Leroy Burgess...so get ready for the next chapter in the career of this music genius.

8bit * 8bit0032 * Gorge * Mood * Tech-House * 2010-06-11 * CD + Bonus CD

Gorge (real name Pit Waldman) has excerted a fair influence on house music via his own output and partnership with Nick Curly in running 8-Bit Records, a label which has largely been attributed to the birth of the “Mannheim” sound which has dominated nightclubs the world over for the past few years.

Gorge has released on prestigious imprints like Dessous, Systematic, Freerange and Diynamic, all the while offering a broad pallete of deep and tech house sounds.

‘Mood’ sees Gorge funnel what his sunny personality and disposition into an LP which sounds like the Mannheim crew on holiday in the Mediterranean. Wanting his album to echo his outlook on life, Gorge has sought to imbue each track with real feeling based around balance, inner peace and harmony with everything and, as such, has created 11 tracks which are mostly named with a suitably corresponding African word to describe their mood.

Moon Harbour * mhr0122 * Martinez * The Paradigm Shift * Tech-House * 2010-06-11 * CD

Throughout his career Martin Swanstein, aka Martinez, has experienced quite a few musical paradigm shifts. And he is certainly not the only one in the techno scene who has done so. Many of his fellow musicians also started, over time, focussing more on certain forms of techno and house music. In the case of Martinez it was a shift from deep house to minimal techno and finally to his current dance-floor house sound. Yet you never get the feeling that Martinez is just jumping on the bandwagon. When his first record, “Momomowha …”, was released on Moon Harbour in 2008 the house revival had just started. Martinez instantly managed to establish his own little niche.

After 3 EPs and a co-production with label boss Matthias Tanzmann, Martinez has established himself on the label’s roster of musicians and represents Moon Harbour at label parties all over the world. When seeing Martinez deejaying, his many years of experience become obvious. He simply knows how to set a club on fire.

“The Paradigm Shift” is already Martin’s third album. It is unique in having mastered the balancing act between dance-floor rhythm and home-listening quality. His organic sound combines all elements like dense beats and jazzy chords - so well, the listener is convinced that all of these are cast from the same mould. Every now and then you get the feeling you are listening to a really old house record that was simply produced with 2010 technology. Funky and, always at just the right moment, explosive.

Stealth Records * relcomp09cd * Various Artists * Release Yourself Vol. 9, mixed by Roger Sanchez * House * 2010-06-10 * 2CD

Some veteran DJs are content to grow old and live off past glories, taking no interest in investing in the future of the scene that they helped to create. Roger Sanchez is not one of those DJs. Many years on from his take-off in the dance music world his Stealth Records label stands strong as a bastion of fresh house music that moves with the times, and discovers and pushes talented young hopefuls to safeguard the future of the genre. Not only that, but for a second season at Ibiza's Amnesia he holds down a residency in The Terrace (alongside Armin Van Buuren's Armada in the main room), keeping the island's house music heritage strong and creating thousands of memories for the droves of faithful clubbers and newcomers alike who come to witness one of the genres most talented and enduring DJs. Nor is he one to stick single-mindendly in the past and refuse to progress. As always, the new volume of his Release Yourself compilation series showcases his distinctive sound alongside the cutting-edge of new house producers, making for an experience that both warms with its familiarity and excites with its freshness. As is now tradition, the first disc eases us in and teases us with a taste of things to come, while the second disc is nothing but peak-time, pure energy anthems with 4 stunning tracks exclusive to this compilation.

Disc 1 charms with its graceful beginnings, soon bringing through classy vocals and moving into the hypnotic deepness and warmth of Manoo + Francois A's Souvenir. Slowly but surely, that more recognisable tribal bump and chunky rhythm begins to creep in. The sound of European underground tech house cuts through the mix on Landmark Biokosmos' Mix of No Me Puedo Controlar from Release Yourself mainstays The Cube Guys, and you soon realise that you're listening to someone who loves the full spectrum of house music - not someone who just looks to play the biggest crowd-pleasing anthems and no-brainers. It's an education for those who know him from more mainstream activities. Ralph Laurentius + Kal El's Her Name Is teases us with the big builds we can expect from Disc 2, but chugs in a cool and understated way, while euphoric vibes slip into the final section, with Anjunadeep star Jamie Matrix adding some unexpected grit on exclusive track Splinter, and a huge S-Man mash-up giving a euphoric climax.

Disc 2 goes straight in for the kill, big room jugular style. Swedish star Avicii's remix of Tim Berg's Bromance kicks off with epic euphoric atmospherics, but the style soon switches to pumping Dutch house with Bobby Burns + Afrojack's Ghettoblaster and Mixin Marc's + Lex Da Funk. A new production from Roger himself makes for a centrepiece, 2Gether, with a powerful vocal sample from The B52s' classic Loveshack a perfect accompany for its uplifting house sound, before the tribal flavours and darker mood begin to work their way in, with George F, Eran Hersh + Darmon Blow doing a bruising job on Afrojack's Esther. A huge remix of the classic Big Love pushes us into firm anthem territory, with the final section a rousing, uplifting quartet with chunky beats and big riffs â€. culminating in Johan Wedel's epic, fizzing, bubbling rework of Dim Chris ft. Amanda Wilson's Sometimes.

After one listen, it's hard to stop yourself from draining your bank account to fund a trip to the White Isle to see this master doing his thing in his natural habitat. Everything that's good about house music is in Release Yourself vol. 9, and its yet another testament to the fact that while you need to keep the young blood coming, there's a reason why some DJs are still where they are after so many years. No-one does it quite like The S-Man, and no-one ever will.

Baroque Records * barqcd020 * Various Artists * Exploring...America, mixed by Randall Jones * UK Progressive * 2010-06-10 * CD

The Blurb

Randall Jones is an American DJ that has logged over 18 years of experience playing + spreading his sound from Miami to Amsterdam, Honololo to Tokyo + London to Dubai. As a producer, Randall has graced the world's biggest labels, dropping killer work for such influential labels as Bedrock, Renaissance + Forensic to name a few - a constant fave of the A listers, with the house + progressive scene jocks lending their support to pretty much all Randall touches.

The next 'Exploring' release in the series is a perfect showcase of this, as within this mix lies a futuristic soundscape...a world of cracking beats, thick bass and sublime grooves. Randall goes for the best parts of tech, progressive + tribal house and combines rolling bass with sizzling, swinging beats + technological soundscapes to create a sound like Bladerunner on funk. If you listen carefully, you can hear samples stitched into the mix that characterize Randall's unique take on the American lifestyle and vibe.

Mood Music * moodcd012 * Penner + Muder * Same Monkeys Different Zoo * Tech-House * 2010-06-10 * CD

Nils Penner and John Muder produced their first 4-Track Demo CD in August 2007. Produced in the Suol Studios in East-Berlin for fun rather than with a full-blown business plan, Sasse signed 2 tracks of this demo for his Moodmusic imprint. „Are You Lost“ became Penner+Muders first vinyl 12“ release. It got great reactions from the dj community and the Bside „Millenium Falcon“ was picked by electro-maestro Oliver Huntemann himself for his Mix Compilation „Play 02! Live at Rex / Paris“. At this time John and Nils made the decision to only play Live sets so the duo could concentrate fully on their own sound, rather than taking a line at the end of the ever-growing dj list. The first gig became quite a kick-off. It happened at a Moodmusic showcase at the well-known Panorama Bar in Berlin late summer 2008 and the feedback was none less than stellar. One good thing lead to another and gigs happened at Watergate, Berlin and Baalsaal, Hamburg with more planned for the spring/summer 2010. Release-wise the guys kept it slow and focussed on quality than quantity. Working from two cities (Hamburg and Berlin) with rather short studio-time it almost took one year before the second EP „No Nose Knows“ hit the stores. Meanwhile the duo has also remixed for Moodmusic, Oliver Koletzki´s XXX label and Suol. Their current single, entitled „Another EP“, is in the pipe on the new imprint Wazi Wazi, which is already gaining support and respect from the critics like De-Bug Magazine. Wazi Wazi is Nils personal label side-project (with Sasse) besides workin with John and handling a graphic design business he is living on. Johns passion is music based and he is working nonstop with his partner in crime Chi-Thien Nguyen aka Chopstick.

Cadenza * cadcd06 * Reboot * Shunyata * Tech-House * 2010-06-10 * CD

In just three years, since his first EP’s under the Reboot moniker appeared on Cadenza and Below, he’s become one of electronic music’s hottest properties, releasing not only a slew of singles for labels likeCocoon, Love Letters from Oslo, Ricardo Villalobos’ Sei Es Drum and underground cult fave Motivbank, but also a pair of high-profile mix CDs for Cocoon and Cécille. His live sets and DJ sessions have takenhim around the world and then some, several times, playing everywhere from mammoth festival stages tothe thatched-roof booth at Ibiza’s Ushuaïa."Shunyata describes my way of life pretty well,” affirms Heinrich, who just last year left his full-time day jobto focus on music. Shunyata might be seen as a response to all that flux. Heinrich took his time with the record, working on musical ideas that extend beyond the limits of a given track. From the sound designs to the grooves to the way the tracks evolve, they all interconnect; intricate polyrhythms wind through the music like ivy, binding the album together. It’s those rhythms you’re likely to notice first: dazzling arrays of congas, bells, cymbals, shakers, woodblocks; sounds that sound like tuned water-drops or aluminum barrels; steely drum machines slicingthe air like knives. But behind the layers of percussion there are stranger, shadowier elements at work:chimes, pings, electronic gurgles, scraps of faraway voices, field recordings, and beneath it all, a spongy, squishy bed of bass, comforting and all-encompassing. Shunyata is very much an album: its long, undulating lines and morphological structures reward deep, repeated listening. Great!

Wagon repair * wrl001cd * Mathew Johnson * Agents Of Time * Techno * 2010-06-07 * CD

Just who are the "Agents of Time" in the title of Mathew Jonson's debut solo album? Is it a reference to futurism, or to the here and now? Is it us, are we them? Whatever the case, it's a suitably open-ended name for a record that presents a side of Mathew Jonson you've never heard before. He's been a major figure on the scene almost since the moment he emerged on Itiswhatitis in 2001, with hotly tipped singles for Perlon and Minus quickly raising his profile. Since then, he's turned out 20-odd singles and EPs, plus remixes for the Chemical Brothers, Moby, Swayzak and even Nelly Furtado. Add to that another nine singles and two albums with Cobblestone Jazz, plus two more EPs with Midnight Operator (Jonson's duo with his brother Nathan Jonson, aka Hrdvsion) and the Modern Deep Left Quartet. He keeps busy. On his own, as a member of Cobblestone Jazz, and as a co-founder of the Wagon Repair label, Jonson has continually pushed and prodded electronic dance music's familiar forms into more distinctive shapes, without ever losing focus on the dancefloor. But the visceral, psychoactive thrills of his biggest Tracks- 2004's "Decompression," "Return of the Zombie Bikers" have sometimes eclipsed the deeper side of Jonson's music.

Agents of Time remedies that, building upon his signature sound by veering into slower, more expansive, more contemplative territory. This album finds Jonson sounding intensely focused, even as he displays more range than ever before.

Origami Productions * xqdu1005 * 45 a.k.a. Swing-O * Revenge of Soul * Funk + Soul * 2010-06-07 * CD

This guy's got a short name, but a really heavy sound - one that's got a great blend of beats, keys, and samples at its core - all served up with a crispy, old school funky sound! 45's approach is a bit like that of Ino Hidefumi - in that he covers older territory with a slightly updated groove, mixing older keyboard funk with a hip hop sensibility. But the sound here is also different than Hidefumi too - given that a number of cuts are more soul/R+B in nature - and occasionally feature guest vocals to flesh out the tunes. 45's groove is also a bit more wide-ranging too - not just older styles, but a range of rhythms that include bits of contemporary soul and hip hop, and which point to his work with the group Izanami - all modes that inflect the keyboards differently from track to track. About 5 of the album's 13 tracks feature vocals, the others are all instrumentals.

Profan * profancd09 * Wolfgang Voigt * Freiland Klaviermusik * Electronica * 2010-06-02 * CD

Wolfgang Voigt returns to the forefront with his a dditions to his 2008 release of "Freiland Klaviermusik," which will be released under the Kompakt sub-label "Profan." This is also a special release in that Freiland Klaviermusik is more than just a compilation of songs, it's a presentation of music that is not only close to Voigt's heart, but also represents a philosophy that combines art, music, and history. Freiland Klaviermusik is Voigt's method of eliminating the boundaries between freely played or improvised music and that of a machine, combining the underlying theme from both; one single sound varied in different ways surrounding the main basic idea of minimal-techno: the four to the floor bass drum. Freiland, much like Immer 3 portrays the thoughtful process in production and compiling that both of these producers share.

Montreal based James Teej has completed his work on his debut full-length album.

Although he's only really made a name for himself in Europe over the past couple of years, Teej has been active in the Canadian scene since the mid-'90s, setting up his own short-lived Reflection Records label and DJing across the country. In the middle of the last decade, Teej made the move to Toronto and continued to DJ and work on tracks, before finally launching his production career properly with tracks on labels like Connect Four and Rebirth.

Matt Edwards and James Masters were impressed by his quirky tech-house style, and invited him to remix Toby Tobias' "In Your Eyes" before offering him an album deal. The resulting work goes by the name of Evening Harvest, and showcases various facets of Teej's sound, including jazzy piano house and moodier low-slung tracks. All ten tracks have been previously unreleased, and the album even includes a collaboration with French multi-instrumentalists dOP.

Lounge Records * lr07210 * Torpedo Boyz * Return of the Ausländers * Electronica * 2010-06-02 * CD

Berlin is not a place where things happenaccording to the normal rules. And Berlin’s Torpedo Boyz — winners of the 2009Independent Music Award for best dance/electronica album for Cum On Feel the Boyz — are proof ofthat.

It all began in 2004 with the rowdy, rambunctious “Gimme a Bassline!” Initially released as a one-off 12-inch, thetrack immediately struck a chord. New York’s Ursula 1000 included it on his Ursadelica compilation, Puma snapped upthe tune for a major TV campaign. Suddenly everyone wanted a piece of theTorpedo Boyz: and Fort Knox Five volunteered to remix the next single. Then asthe ideas continued to flow, artists from Smoove, Skeewiff, and the PinkerTones to Cubismo Grafico and Groove Allegiance lined up to re-rub a series ofhit 12-inches, including “Are You Talking To Me???” and “Japaneeze Boyz,”.

Their infectious energy and zany outfits helpedtake the phenomenon to the next level. In rejecting the rules ofelectronic-production-duo-by-the-numbers, the Boyz won over audiences everywherethey played, from Los Angeles to Canada’s Whistler to Moscow and in legendaryBerlin venues like Tresor. Word of their incredible live show spread, and in2009 the band was invited to tour China and Spain.

Now we have Torpedo Boyz’ third album, Return of the Ausländers. The title is arye comment on the Boyz’ all-encompassing philosophy, with their lyrics inJapanese, English and German, and their musical miscegeny blurring bordersbetween genres. It includes thesingles “Back To The Beatz” and “Welcome To The Sugar Show” (soon available ina Lack Of Afro remix). The new record is bringing in new sounds - likeReturner’s Krautrock influenced “Maschinenwelt”.
