Kompakt have a rich tradition of releasing top quality mix CDs. In addition to Michael Mayer’s Immer releases, DJ Koze first grabbed international attention via his "All Peoples Is My Friend" set in 2004. Tobias Thomas has to be one of the most notable entrants into the Kompakt mix hall of fame however, having previously released the Fur Dich and Smallville CDs in 2000 and 2003, respectively. "Please Please Please" is a strange beast, straddling the shifting boundaries between Kompakt’s Pop Ambient-style output and straight-up floor killers. Via uncommonly contributions from Pantha Du Prince and the aforementioned DJ Koze, the mix takes a good ten minutes before anything approaching a beat rears its head, Thomas instead laying down some heavy-duty atmospherics that work a treat. The hazy Detroit textures of Das Krause Duo’s ‘Kingpult’ get things moving along nicely, segueing into the cavernous minimalism (if that isn’t too much of a contradiction in terms) of Johannes Heil’s ‘Aquarius’. More direct techno manoeuvres come courtesy of Ricardo Villalobos, Reinhardt Voigt and Pachulke & Sohn, before the mix takes a turn towards pop music in its final furlong, with tracks by Brant (as remixed by Ada), International Pony and most peculiarly, a cover of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ by Stella, here given a slinky midtempo makeover by Geiger and Thomas himself. The unusual narrative arc this disc takes means Thomas’ mix makes for quite a journey, moving from abstract electronics, into 4/4 productions, eventually settling into out-and-out aural blissout, Kompakt style. It really shouldn’t work at all, but somehow Thomas delivers another winning selection - one that comes highly recommended.
