From the distant Nordic land of the midnight sun and Aurora Borealis; the place which brought you quirky, groove and very intelligent dance music, from artists such as Mental Overdrive (the Norwegian uberlord of techno), Roysopp, Biosphere, Xploding Plasix, Jaga Jazzist, Rune Lindbeak, and more recetly Lindstrom, Toy and Casiokids, we bring news of their latest talent.
Tromso based Beatservice, one of Norway's finest and long established electronic labels, give birth to their news artist, local hero Kohib, with his astonishing debut album, Make Fire. Artist, DJ and club promoter Kohib, AKA Oivind A. Sjovoll, has rapidly established himself on Tromso's hip music scene. As a producer he is know for his jazzed out Kings of Convenience, Mari Boine and Fjordfunk remixes, as well as 'Truger', his playful contribution series Prima Norsk. He performed at last year's Insomnia, one of Norway's leading dance/electronic music festivals, based in Tromso, Norway's capitol of house and techno since the genre emerged, to a very receptive audience.
'Make Fire' is deep, rainy, beats laden and considered, dubstepped electronic, tripped 'opped pop and drummed out bass. Think Biosphere, DFA, Tru Thoughts, Tricky, Radiohead, Portishead, Pink Floyd and whatever else has laced Trosmo's water supply. Highlights include 'My Command', 'MakeHistory' and 'The Fang Song'. Kohib is a continually evolving live project, incorporating graphic designer Simen Jusdal on visuals. It's an edgy experience mostly. An axe chopping through ice and snow.
