Chris Coco has created a wonderful set of tunes on Feel Free Live Good. After multiple adventures with the band City Reverb, DJ’ing for Robbie Williams, and his usual circuit of global DJ dates, compilations, mixes and radio shows Coco took some time out. He spent a few months preparing these musical delights at 99, his studio in Camden, London. With the help of a laptop, a microphone, some very old synths and a bunch of good friends Feel Free Live Good was born. It was a very relaxed process, friends would pop in and lay down vocals and musical parts for Coco to manipulate and process. “It’s amazing what you can get people to do for a bowl of pasta and a couple of glasses of Rioja,” reflects Coco on the laidback but fruitful recording experience. Cool Million ´s “ Going Out Tonight” Album remixed by the legendary Tom Moulton. Tom Moulton (born 1940) is an American Record Producer and originator of the remix, the breakdown section, and the 12-inch – Single Vinyl format. He has humbly maintained that the last two innovations were pure accidents. Perhaps contrary to expectation, Moulton's early successes in "mixing down" dance records were the result of insistently taking away elements from the original multi-track. That’s exactly what he does to Cool Million´s music. Moulton, now 60, still kicks ass in the remix stakes and has lost none of the fire that he possessed during the 70s. Indeed, it’s hard not to recognize this fact, even if you are a boy. “Live at Robert Johnson Vol. 6” comes straight from Arto Mwambe’s mind and out of their mixing desk guts. Instead of grabbing a bunch of records and gluing them together (i.e. the classic DJ mix CD), the dynamic duo that is melody boy Phillip Lauer and rhythm doctor Christian Beisswenger (Brontosaurus, Frankfurt am Main, untouchable Robert Johnson resident material and Ramona’s secret love interests) decided to do exactly that what sets them apart from most of their peers: to play live indeed (as in “live” and not as in pressing the space bar on a laptop). Japanese label Soundofspeed issue a fantastic label compilation featuring various artists on their roster, entitled Circles. Tokyo-based owner Yamazaki Hiro started out in the party promotion game, putting on Tokyo shows for figures such as Claude Young, Adam Freeland, DJ Hell, Jimpster, Plaid and Tom Middleton. In 2000, he then used these connections to launch the Soundofspeed imprint with an album from Jimpster, entitled Live at Soundofspeed, before going on to release material from Cable, EBZ and Luke Vibert. Vibert and Hiro first met at the Big Chill festival on the Greek island of Naxos in '01, and since then they've been good friends, with Vibert producing a hip-hop album for the label two years ago. Does techno music really need the album format? Let's put it differently: can techno work outside the established boundaries of the 12“? A look back into history shows little convincing examples. Dancefloor tracks, made for DJ's, follow a structure which require a damn perfect dancefloor in your living room in order to adequately absorb that very energy.
